RSG Commends Florida on the Chad Meredith Act

WASHINGTON, DC, June 9, 2005 - The Society of Recovering Sorority Girls, through its founders Kristina “Morgan” Rose and Deandra “Brooksie” Brooks, congratulate the State of Florida and Governor Jeb Bush for signing the Chad Meredith Act. The new law dictates that hazing, which results in serious injury or death, is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison, even if the victim consents. Putting someone at risk of injury can be prosecuted as a misdemeanor.

"The Society of Recovering Sorority Girls, like the State of Florida, firmly believes that hazing is a criminal act with no part in collegiate Greek life," stated Kristina "Morgan" Rose. " Hazing is against the core mission of a successful organization and places members at an unacceptable risk of harm. The outdated ritual does nothing to foster brotherhood, sisterhood, personal growth or chapter unity."

“What really makes me sad is the way a few bad members have tarnished the reputation of the Greek community as a whole,” said Brooksie. “Hazing is not a part of the mainstream Greek experience .”

Morgan and Brooksie credit their collegiate sorority experience as the basis for the development of their business skills. Further, they point out that sorority life is designed to promote self-esteem and personal growth rather than expose members to humiliation or danger.

"We hope the enactment of the Chad Meredith bill will provide national organizations and universities with a strong tool to end hazing,” said Morgan.

Florida is now one of eight states that classify certain types of hazing as a felony.

“Members of sororities and fraternities should never have to chose between their own safety or membership in their chosen organization. We hope that laws like the Chad Meredith Act will bring an end to hazing so that Greek life is recognized solely for its philanthropic and social achievements,” concluded Brooksie.
