WASHINGTON, DC, November 15, 2005 - The Society of Recovering Sorority Girls,
through its founders Kristina “Morgan” Rose and Deandra “Brooksie” Brooks, celebrate National Philanthropy
Day® by announcing their Platinum Tiara Awards in Philanthropic Achievement. This
year’s winners are Arlington Public Schools, Oprah Winfrey, and
Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity.
"In celebration of National Philanthropy Day®, the Society of Recovering
Girls has decided to begin recognizing the philanthropic achievements of individuals and organizations that are making our
world a better place to live," explained Rose.
National Philanthropy Day®, officially recognized on November 15, is observed by numerous professional fundraisers, government
leaders, businesses and individuals to honor all the contributions philanthropy has made.
The day provides an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of giving, all that it has accomplished, and the remaining
work to be done.
“The Society of Recovering Sorority Girls’ Platinum Tiara Awards in Philanthropic Achievement
recognize three categories of leadership: partnership, individual and organizational
success,” noted Brooks.
The 2005 Platinum Tiara Awards in Philanthropic Achievement recognize:
Arlington Public Schools – Philanthropic Achievement in Partnership. For
the past two years, Arlington Public Schools has cosponsored the Society of Recovering Sorority Girls’ Project Cinderella,
a formal dress drive which seeks to make prom more affordable for lower income students.
Oprah Winfrey – Individual Contributions
in Philanthropic Achievement. From donating
millions of her own personal wealth to inspiring others to simply help those around them, Ms. Winfrey truly lives by the credo
of her Angel Network “you get from the world what you give to the world.”
Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity – Organizational Success in Philanthropic Achievement. This national sorority leverages the energy of its membership to be a leader in breast cancer awareness
and research. The organization is associated with several nationally branded
campaigns including THINK-PINK!®, Yoplait Save Lids to Save Lives®, and The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
A
strong support for philanthropic service has been a long-standing belief for nearly every national sorority since organizations
began forming in the mid-19th century. The Society of Recovering Sorority
Girls, also known as Rho Sigma Gamma, is no exception. Although the organization
is most widely recognized for its annual formal dress drive, members are encouraged to utilize home entertaining techniques
to spearhead local initiatives in their own communities.
“On
behalf of the Society of Recovering Sorority Girls, we congratulate this year’s winners,” concluded Rose.
